► City Council Petition

Don’t let the council tell you where to live!

Nottingham City Council are wanting to implement a new rule that will make it harder for landlords to convert houses into student accommodation, restricting which areas of the city they can be.

The majority of accommodation that students rent (and other people too) are labelled by the council as a ‘house in multiple occupancy’ (HMO). The council want to force landlords to seek formal approval when converting a ‘normal’ house in to a property suitable for multiple occupants (students).

How will this affect students?

As student numbers increase, the demand for private rented accommodation will increase too. Instead of landlords offering you new apartments in popular areas like West Bridgford or Forest Fields, they will be forced to offer them in areas of the City that the council dictate. In other words, the council will be saying where you can and can’t live.

Why are they doing this?

The council don’t like areas of the city that have a concentration of students living in rented accommodation. They unfairly believe that it makes the community ‘un-balanced’ and that students don’t respect areas where they live. If they can control where new properties are developed, over time, they can control where students live.

What can I do?

The easiest way to protest against this is by signing the online petition here. Over 1000 University of Nottingham students have already signed (this will affect them too) and now it’s your chance to tell the council what you think.

Remember: Nottingham is your city too. You have the right to chose where you want to live, not where the council say you can.
