► Home Security

Home security is a key issue for all students at Trent. Whether you live in halls or private rented accommodation, be sure to take care of your belongings. Fortunately, just by taking the simple steps below, you can make yourself less vulnerable to burglary.

Lock Up!

  • This is the most important thing to remember, as a third of all burglaries happen because a door or window has been left open. This is because most burglars are opportunists taking advatnage of an easy situation. Remember to lock all windows and doors; a burglar only needs 30 seconds to pinch a laptop.
  • If you are going out at night, close your curtains and leave a light on to give the impression somebody is in. Keep valuables like your laptop out of sight.Make sure all your doors and windows are locked at night too. Don’t assume one of your housemates will lock up for you.
  • Ask your landlord to fit deadlocks to all outside doors - burglars hate them because you need a key to open them from the inside as well as the outside.
  • Ask them to put key operated locks on all downstairs or accessible windows - burglars don't like having to smash windows because of the noise and the danger of cutting themselves.
  • Lock up goods in your garden - including ladders, tools and bikes - not only are these are at risk from being stolen, but burglars can also use them to break in. If the landlord is doing any maintenance make sure that they take their equipment down such as ladders and try to get any work involving scaffolding put off until summer when you won’t be in the house/flat.
  • If you live in a hall of residence, be careful who you let in - or who follows you into the building. Lock your bedroom door even if you are only going down the corridor.

Use SmartWater to protect your property!

SmartWater deters burglars by providing forensic traceability to your valuable items.

Anything marked with SmartWater can be irrefutably linked back to you if stolen, whilst the thief can be linked to the crime. As a result SmartWater acts as a powerful deterrent to criminals.

The invisible liquid is simply painted onto your valuables and, once dry, it is virtually impossible to remove. Only a tiny sample is needed to identify the true owner. SmartWater also comes with high-visibility window stickers, which should be prominently displayed to warn potential thieves that your property is marked!

SmartWater property coding kits are available at the discounted rate of £18 (including VAT and postage) if you are studying at one of Nottingham’s Universities. This will protect your valuables for the duration of your time here.

To order your SmartWater simply log on to the SmartWater student portal and make sure you have your student ID number to hand. Add a student kit to the shopping basket and, when prompted, add the University where you are studying (UoN or NTU), which will apply the discount.
