The votes have now been counted in NTSU's first-ever RAG Charity Elections, and we are very happy to announce the charities that you, the students of NTU, want RAG to represent this academic year:
Well done and thanks to all of the charities who got involved, and thanks to everyone who voted.
Nottingham University Hospitals Charity
Nottingham Hospitals Charity exists to support the work that takes place at the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital in Nottingham.
Donations to the Charity are used to benefit patients at Nottingham’s hospitals by providing added extras such as improved patient environments, specialist equipment, medical research and staff development programmes.
One area which Nottingham Hospitals Charity supports is Nottingham Children’s Hospital, which is located at the Queen’s Medical Centre campus.
Nottingham Children’s Hospital provides care for children and young people across the region and beyond for a wide range of conditions, from diabetes and cancer to emergencies and broken bones.
Nottingham Hospitals Charity has helped fund a variety of vital projects at the Children’s Hospital, including life-saving medical equipment, a youth room for teenage patients to spend time away from the clinical environment, and weekly visits from Clown Doctors to cheer up younger patients.
When You Wish Upon A Star
When You Wish Upon a Star is a local charity who grant Wishes for children between the ages of 2-16 with a life threatening illness.
All children have Wishes, but for the children and families we support, that Wish is so much more precious. Each Wish brings with it the opportunity to look forward to something very special, to forget about their often painful treatments and to simply be a child for the day, creating special treasured memories.
Funds that are donated to our charity go towards granting these special Wishes. For some it is an exciting trip to Disneyland in Florida, for others it is a chance to meet their favourite sporting hero or pop star. Some children Wish to be a fairy princess or soldier for the day, whilst others would simply like a laptop to keep in contact with their school friends whilst in hospital.
One of the biggest highlights for the Charity is taking hundreds of Wish children on a very special magical trip to Lapland to meet the real Father Christmas. We could not organise such trips without your help! It costs us £700 to take one child and a parent on this truly magical trip.
As a non government funded charity we really do rely on the support from our supporters to enable us to continue granting these very special Wishes to some very special children – we could not grant these very special Wishes without the support from our supporters.
World Child Cancer
Cancer touches most of us in some way but we know that if a loved one of ours was diagnosed with the disease; they would have access to and receive the best cancer care available to them.
Around the world tens of thousands of children die every year because of a lack of basic understanding and treatment. Worse still, most die without any effective palliative care and pain relief. The chance of survival in some countries is less than 10%.
World Child Cancer was established in 2007 to help this neglected cause.
This year our charity has supported 1000 children in six low and middle income countries. We do this by twinning each of our projects with hospitals in the developed world therefore creating a mentoring system. We educate doctors and nurses on site, we work with project leaders to develop long term sustainability of projects and we provide funding so that each and every child with cancer, walking through the hospital doors has the chance of a cure and has palliative care available to them.
It costs less than £60 to fund chemotherapy and palliative care drugs in sub-Saharan Africa. Please support us if you can. Thank you.
