Sex is a fantastic experience. But it stops being fun when you realise that you’ve contracted an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) just because you were being lazy. No matter what your sexual interests are, or how much you have sex, it is always important to stay safe, protect yourself and take the proper precautions.

Activities of Risk

Unprotected Anal Intercourse

Unprotected Vaginal Intercourse

Sharing Needles of any kind (e.g., Drugs)

Unprotected oral sex on a menstruating woman

Unprotected oral sex on a man with ejaculation in mouth

Unprotected fingering

Unprotected oral sex on a man without ejaculation in mouth

Unprotected oral sex on a non-menstruating woman

Sharing uncovered sex toys

Anal intercourse with a condom

Vaginal intercourse with a condom

Oral sex on a man with a condom

Oral sex on a woman using a latex barrier (e.g. dental dam)

Fisting/fingering with a latex glove or condom

Mutual Masturbation

Masturbation using unshared sex toys

Masturbation without sex toys

Touching or Hugging

If you think you have an STI, don't panic! Make an appointment with your Doctor as soon as possible. There are medical centres on Clifton and City campuses which you should register with while at University - especially if you are not from Nottingham. Alternatively, you can go to one of the NHS drop-in centres in Nottingham who can test for HIV and other STI's, usually without appointment.
