What is RAG?

RAG is the Students Union’s fundraising group – many Unions across Britain have their own RAG department, so naturally we’re aiming to be the best! We offer a vast range of activities, from the sensible to the slightly more absurd, including raids (bucket collections) and megaraids (bucket collections with other RAG groups). We aim to raise as much money as possible for the charities – chosen by you – that need our help.

What is a Raid/Megaraid?

Raid – a raid is simply a bucket collection - but it’s not as dull as it sounds! You’re with other members of Trent RAG, dressed wildly (if you desire) and laying on the cheeky charm with the generous public. It’ll put your persuasiveness skills to the test!

Megaraid – a megaraid is pretty much the same deal, except RAG groups from other universities take part as well, and it usually involves stopping overnight somewhere. In the past, we’ve been on megaraids to places like Dublin, Edinburgh, and Manchester. The accommodation’s basic, but free - a great way to see new cities!

Where might I stay on a Megaraid?

Usually the accommodation is very basic, such as a church floor – on megaraids you’re advised to take a sleeping bag and pillow.

Sometimes the charity may arrange for a hostel; but given the cost incurred by the charity, it’s unlikely.

How much do RAG events cost?

RAG is completely free to join. However, there may be a cost relating to the event depending on the activity. For example, we may ask for a small contribution to help cover petrol costs when we’re going on a raid, or we may ask for a registration fee for a sponsored event.

It’s best to check individual activities for confirmed prices.

What sort of activities has RAG done in the past?

Raids (bucket collecting), Megaraids (bucket collecting in a random city with overnight stay), abseils, hitch-hikes, walking challenges, running challenges, club nights, awareness-raising events, Krispy Kreme selling, speed-dating, pub crawls, cake sales... the list goes on...

I’m not interested in bucket collecting. What else can I do?

Bucket collecting isn’t everyone’s bag, but it can be loads of fun. Give it a try – you might love it! If you’re really reluctant, then you could try out one of our other fun activities... Check out our upcoming events; these could include hitch-hiking, a walking challenge, or a pub crawl, to name but a few.

Do I have to dress up when taking part in an event?

No – it’s entirely up to you how you dress. Sometimes people feel they get more attention and more money when bucket collecting in fancy dress, but if you don’t feel comfortable we’ll have a charity-branded t-shirt for you to wear.

Some of the events seem a bit dangerous. How will I be kept safe?

Some of RAG’s events do carry risks to your personal safety.

We risk assess each activity and make every effort to minimise dangers; although please be aware that in certain instances we cannot eliminate risk entirely and that you embark on an event at your own discretion.

For each event where there is a chance of personal injury or death, we will ask participants to sign disclaimer forms to ensure that you understand the hazards and take responsibility for your own actions for the duration of the event. Provided in each pack will be tips on how to keep yourself and teammates safe.

If you have any concerns about the safety of events, please do contact us.

Who organises the activities?

RAG is entirely student-led (with a little bit of help from NTSU staff and Exec), so the fundraising at NTSU is planned and delivered by members of the RAG Committee or students with an interest in fundraising. If you want to be part of the RAG Committee, or you just want to organise a one-off fundraising event, then contact us at RAG@su.ntu.ac.uk.

Last year we raised £50,614.70 for local, national and international charities.

Where does all the money go?

We support various charities - from the larger, well-known organisations, to charities that are just starting up. Last year, the majority of funds raised by Trent students were for the following charities:

  1. Balls to Poverty - £8230.33
  2. Interpal/The Gaza Appeal - £4553.57
  3. Cancer Research UK - £4027.63
  4. Fund4Rwanda - £3421.18
  5. Childreach International - £3007.19

I’d like RAG to raise money for a certain charity - can this happen?

Yes, it’s certainly a possibility. We want students to have as much input as possible into where the money we raise goes; it’s likely that we’ll ask for your vote in a choice of three of four charities.

I’d like to organise my own fundraiser. How do I do it?

That’s great! The RAG Committee and Student Volunteer Coordinator can offer support when it comes to organising your own fundraiser. You can also request our fundraising pack, which will offer you suggestions and tips for how to raise money. Email RAG@su.ntu.ac.uk for more help or to receive your fundraising pack.

I’m taking part in a RAG sponsored event. Can I use justgiving.com?

Of course - justgiving.com is an easy and quick way to get friends and family to sponsor you. However, we still need to know how much money you have raised for the charity, so if you’re using justgiving.com or a similar website, make sure you inform RAG when you’ve finished collecting sponsorship.

What are the benefits of using justgiving.com?

Justgiving.com is a great way for friends and family who live further afield to sponsor you. It means you don’t have to go around collecting pennies from people, and it’s all done securely via the internet.

I’m struggling to raise enough money for my event – can you help?

We’ll try our best! We can’t give you any money, but if you’re stuck for ideas and need our support, then don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’ll help out as best we can.

What recognition can I get for fundraising?

Towards the end of the academic year we will be hosting the NTSU Awards, so throughout the year we’ll be looking out for the best fundraisers and keeping a record of involvement and how much money you have raised.

We also offer certificates for participation detailing monies raised, on request.

What policies and procedures do you follow?
