Burglary
One in six burglary victims are students. Unfortunately thieves will target student areas because students have plenty of attractive items to steal.
Burglars are opportunists and up to 50% of student burglaries occur through open windows or unlocked doors. You can reduce your chance of being burgled whilst at University by taking the following simple steps:
· Lock your doors and windows every time you go out, even if you are only going to the shop or nipping to a friend’s house. It only takes a few seconds for a burglar to strike!
· If you are going out at night, close your curtains and leave a light on to give the impression somebody is in. Keep valuables like your laptop out of sight.Make sure all your doors and windows are locked at night too. Don’t assume one of your housemates will lock up for you.
· Mark your property with your home postcode and house number with a UV pen and record the serial numbers of your valuable equipment like laptops and phones free of charge at www.immobilise.com (formerly the MEND database).
· Marking your property and logging the serial numbers will help the Police trace the owners of stolen property. Criminals will also be deterred from being caught in the possession of stolen property because they know it can be traced.
· Get your valuables marked with SmartWater. It’s FREE to all residents of Nottingham and is an excellent preventative and recoverable tool for theft.
Remember to respect the rights of the permanent residents in your area. If you are planning on having a party, let your neighbours know. Remember, your neighbours will be able to keep an eye on your property when you go home at Christmas and Easter.
