Blood Service Policy

The Union Notes:

1.      The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) current policy bans donations from men who have had oral or anal sex with another man regardless of protection.

The Union Believes:

1.      That the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) discriminates against gay and bisexual men by stigmatising a group, rather than assessing the risk of an individual’s behaviour and actions.

6.      That there is a national shortage in blood supply.

5.      That all gay and bisexual individuals should have the right to be able to be screened to donate blood.

4.      That blood donation is a worthwhile civic duty and in no way should we discourage people from donating blood at sessions on campus.

3.      That the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) should not regard all gay and bisexual men, whether monogamous or not, as constituting a single group with a single level of risk.

2.      That the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) policy acts to perpetuate the myth that ‘AIDS is a gay disease’ and ignores official the Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STI’s) statistics.

5.      That the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) runs donation sessions on campus.

4.      That many gay and bisexual men live in monogamous long-term relationships, presenting little risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.

3.      That many heterosexuals who have engaged in high-risk unprotected sexual activity, or who have has sex in high-risk countries, are not totally prevented from donation.

  1. The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) current policy bans donations from women who have had any sexual encounter with a man within the last twelve months who has had oral or anal sex with another man regardless of protection.
