NTSU hosts first PG Conference

Last week the Students’ Union hosted its very first Postgraduate Conference.

The Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Conference was organised after students expressed an interest in postgrad-specific events and networking with other postgraduates.

It brought together PhD and masters students from a variety of different schools and gave them the opportunity to learn about each other’s research as well as meet academics including Carl Brown, the Head of the Doctoral School, and Dr Kate Robins, a careers consultant at NTU who specialises in providing advice and opportunities for Postgraduate students.

Social responsibility, human rights, mental health and isolation were just a few of the research topics covered at the event and we’ve had some amazing feedback from the students who attended.

Hannah Loret-Howick, a PhD student at NTU, said: "This conference was one of the most supportive and friendly I've been to. It was a great opportunity to meet other postgraduate students and get honest feedback about my work."

Lauren Jones, a masters student who attended the conference added: “Presenting at the conference was a great opportunity to practice my presenting skills without the usual pressure of having it assessed and it gave me the chance to network with likeminded students. It was a really positive experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering presenting their research, plus it looks good on the old CV!”

Following on from the success of the conference, the Students’ Union is working on a number of other postgraduate-specific events including an employability conference in February. We’d love to hear what you as a postgraduate student would like to see at the event, whether that’s working on your public speaking, boosting your CV or improving your interview skills so please email me if you have any ideas or suggestions.
