What is Black Futures?

Black Futures is a continuation of the work that goes into celebrating and reflecting on Black culture during Black History Month. We recognise that the Black experience is not limited to one month each year, and have made a commitment to work year-round to better represent our Black students and staff. It is a year-long program of events, resources and campaigns to help create a more equal future for everyone.

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month has been celebrated in the UK for nearly 40 years. The month is dedicated to recognising and reflecting on the diverse histories and continued influence of those from African and Caribbean descent. Across the world, anti-Black racism has resulted in the exclusion of Black people from history; Black History Month was created to fight back against this erasure.

Take a look at our Black History Month events programme.

Our Commitment

NTSU recognises that it needs to do more to better support its Black students, staff and local community.

NTSU commits to:

  • Recruiting more Black staff: addressing the lack of staff diversity by implementing a new recruitment policy
  • Actively campaigning to reduce the Black Awarding Gap at NTU
  • Supporting local Black businesses through an online market
  • Raising the level of education around race and anti-racist practice by providing workshops and activities for students on campus
  • Campaigning for the University to create a better reporting system for on-campus incidents of racism
