Nottingham Trent Students’ Union has made the move to biodegradable straws!

It’s something we’ve been working on introducing for a while on account of the environmental damage caused by single use plastic straws and we’re delighted to have finally made the transition.

We’re one of many organisations across the country who are putting a stop to the use of plastic straws that can take up to 200 years to biodegrade. NUS is running a national campaign dedicated to encouraging as many SUs as possible to do the same, and it’s not the only change we’re making.

To discourage unnecessary use we’ve taken straws off display in our bars too, however they are still readily available. If you would like one, just ask when you order your drink. It’s hoped that this will reduce the amount of straws used overall as well as improving the environmental impact of the ones we do use at the SU.

Steve Potter, Food and Beverage Manager, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to introduce biodegradable straws to the Students’ Union. We’re very conscious of our impact on the environment so it was important for us to find a solution to this growing problem. We would really appreciate the support of our students through the transition. By making a conscious effort to cut down on using straws where possible, you'll be helping us to make a huge difference.
