The Students’ Union has a brand new community for students with disabilities!
NTSU Communities aim to bring together like-minded students who share a passion, interest or activity without the long-term commitment of creating a society and Enable, the SU’s newest one, does just that.
It’s been designed to unite students with all forms of disabilities, both physical and mental health-related, and offer them access to a social group who understand and support each other. Enable also has big plans to raise awareness of the issues that disabled students face at university and help work towards solutions for them.
Chelsea, one of the students who set up NTSU Enable, said: “As a disabled first year student, I found it quite difficult to really settle in and find my place at university. I knew that I couldn't be the only one, but equally it felt near impossible to find the others like me. It was for this reason I wanted to set up a community for students who self-define as disabled, whatever their disability. I want to build a network of students with disabilities at NTU with events and gatherings that are accessible to all, and I hope that in the future this really benefits both new and existing students even after I finish my degree.”
Graham Bowe, NTSU’s Disabled Students Officer also helped to create the community. He said: “Life for disabled students at university can be extremely isolating so I wanted to create a group where disabled students could make new friends and find other disabled students who would understand and be empathetic to each other. I want our community to be inclusive of all forms of disability. We’re here for anyone who feels they should join!”
The new Community is hosting its first event this Wednesday (15th May). It’s taking place in the Think Tank, City SU between 6-7pm and is a chance for you to meet its members and find out more about their plans for the future.
