Health and Safety

The health and safety of your members is your top priority.

Here are the steps you’ll need to take to make sure your events and activities take this into consideration.

You will need to complete a risk assessment for any event or activity you do as part of your community. Risk assessments need to be attached to an Activity Form.  Risk Assessments are about minimising potential danger and putting measures in place to avoid foreseeable risks. You have a duty of care towards anyone who attends your events, and if an incident happens they show that you did everything you could to make an activity safe.

For the exact details of completing a risk assessment and calculating risks please look at the Risk Assessment Guide. You can find template risk assessments to help you out here.

If someone attending one of your events or activities has an accident or near miss at one of your events, you’ll need to fill in the Accident or Near Miss form. It helps us to identify any potential hazards and minimise the risk of them becoming bigger problems in the future.

When providing food and drink at an event, there are a few options to ensure that this is done safely:

  • You can get a food hygiene certificate which will let you make and serve your own food at an event. You can go through this process by contacting our health and safety department
  • You can pay for NTU or NTSU catering
  • If it is something we cannot cater for, you can use an external caterer. This will require getting a Food Hygiene Certificate, Public Liability Insurance (PLI) and event plan from the external caterer in advance of your event.

You will need to include any information about catering in the Student Group Activity Booking Form
