Thank you for your Big Idea. Unfortunately, Student Council voted to reject this idea, as it was felt like a regular classes would be better organised by a society of students; for more information on how to start a society, please head to trentstudents.org/societies.

The University should provide cooking classes run by the chefs on campus for people who have limited cooking skills. The classes will hopefully allow students to save money and learn a vital life skill as many people wouldn't have cooked before they go to University. Weekly or fortnightly sessions to teach some basic skills would go a long way to ease people into the independence that University demands.

Wouldn’t work, too many students. Unless the chefs recorded an online live stream where students can tune in from their very own kitchens and have an interactive live chat too for any questions or queries.

I think there are enough youtube videos out there to teach people how to cook, lets face it, students can’t be bothered to cook and prefer to eat out or buy ready-cooked meals. Cooking is a very essential skill I agree, but not one that university should teach in my opinion

Just to answer the above two points; Chidozie; If students were to book onto the classes in the same way they do for library workshops and sports sessions, the number would be capped and proper teaching could happen. I quite like the online live streaming idea; or even just the chef's releasing some basic videos on the NTSU youtube channel as a co-current learning tool along with the lessons! Giosue: I think you're making a very wrong presumption about all students there; I think loads would love to learn to cook whilst here! As a matter of fact, learning to cook would eliminate some of the problems that moving to University can cause of weight gain and overspending on takeaways and ready meals. Youtube videos are one thing, but getting some hands on experience in a controlled environment would be far more beneficial for learning! I spoke to Ivan Hopkins (Head chef at NTU) and he said that he felt the University should provide lessons and was well on board with the idea!

What about creating a student food society? letting students take ownership of this issue could be the way forward...
