Our students’ union is shocked and appalled by the racist incident this week in one of the halls of residence and by the response of the housing provider, UPP. Both are absolutely unacceptable.
The safety and wellbeing of the student affected is our number one priority. We reached out to offer support to her through our Information & Advice Service as soon as we became aware of the incident. We urge any other students who are affected by this to also contact our Information & Advice Service or the University’s Student Support Services.
Those believed to be responsible have been suspended from the University with immediate effect. The police have launched a criminal investigation, leading to two arrests in relation to the incident. NTSU welcomes these arrests and hopes that investigations will now progress quickly.
The Union will now formally request a meeting with senior managers at the University to find out what action it intends to take to ensure that UPP are aware of the concern their management failures have generated amongst our members. We will also seek assurances that appropriate action is taken to improve the procedures.
The Union is committed to ensuring that racism, hate crime and prejudice of any kind are not tolerated on our campuses.
