Indhirajith (Indhi) Umashankari

My name is Indhirajith Umashankari, but most people call me Indhi.

I am not standing for this role for a title — I am standing because I know what it feels like to struggle silently.

Like many of you, I balance studies with work, responsibilities, and pressure. I know the late nights, the self-doubt, and the feeling of wanting someone to truly listen. No student should ever feel invisible or alone.

That is why I am here — not to lead above you, but to stand beside you.

Leadership, to me, means empathy, service, and action. It means turning your concerns into real change and being someone you can trust.

My priorities are simple:

  • A strong student voice that is heard and acted upon
  • Better wellbeing and mental health support
  • More career and practical opportunities to prepare us for the future

I am not perfect, but I am sincere, hardworking, and deeply committed. I will listen, show up, and work every day for you.

Because this role is not about me — it’s about us.

Candidate Photo

Dylan Murray

I want to be president because I love NTSU and Trent. It is the only role that will allow me to lead, draw on all my previous experience, address priorities, and reflect my wide interests. I see parts of myself in almost every student I meet, and I use that to be empathetic when conveying student voices. I thrive on taking a proactive approach to leadership by instilling trust, openness and confidence. My experience includes prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls advocacy since I was 16, School Officer of the Year Award, Elections Committee, Consent Facilitator, 2 years running and Welcome Assistant, which means being one of the faces of the union and working across the organisation just like the president.

If elected, I would prioritise the following:

  • Tackling sexual Violence by expanding existing programmes such as the bystander training programme and promoting healthy relationships
  • Improving rent affordability, conditions and help to find co-renters
  • Promoting healthy living, focusing on Mental Health and Exercise
  • Ease access to and improve information for international students, potentially by translating support information into other languages.

Don't worry, vote Murray!

Fun facts: I ice skate, coach, worked in the Foreign Office and love country music.

Candidate Photo

Joe Cormack

I’m running for President to give every NTU student a voice.

Advocacy: I will be a visible, active voice, campaigning locally and nationally to ensure NTU students’ voices shape decisions on issues such as cost of living, housing, student finance, public transport, and the student experience. Pushing for meaningful change that improves students’ lives.

Safety: I will make student safety a top priority. Advocating for safer public transport, supporting welfare schemes across Nottingham’s nightlife, and continuing action to prevent and respond to sexual violence. Every student deserves to feel safe and supported when studying, working, or socialising.

Opportunities: I will break down barriers to ensure opportunities are inclusive and accessible, expanding accessible sport, improving awareness of opportunities, and ensuring students from all backgrounds feel represented and empowered at NTU.

Education: I will push for fair, accessible, and transparent education by strengthening student representation, improving communication and addressing inconsistencies across courses.

Officer Accountability: I will ensure officers are open, transparent and accountable. I will improve how officers communicate, introducing a clear, shared platform for updates, progress and campaigns, as well as empowering student leaders to hold officers accountable.

So, do you want someone who’s got your back? Vote for Joe Cormack.

Abdullah Ahmed

Hello, my name is Abdullah, also known as Ahmed. I have spent four years studying at NTU, and I am running to be your Students' Union President because I believe every student deserves to be heard and supported throughout their time.

As the Vice President of the Investment Society, I helped lead 40% membership growth this year by focusing on engagement, opportunity and real value for all members. Now I would like to bring the same results-driven leadership to represent all students across NTU.

My priorities are:

  • Improve access to opportunities and enhance everyday student life. I will work tirelessly to ensure your feedback leads to real change.
  • Collaborate with the university and the wider community and ensure decisions are shaped by what truly matters to you as a student.
  • Revamp the student union website and the digital infrastructure. Ensure electronic communications are clearer, faster and allow greater personalisation options for societies and students alike (no more broken forms).

Furthermore, if elected, I will lead with accountability and commitment to making NTSU the best experience for all students and societies.

Candidate Photo

Aimal Asif

I’m Aimal Asif, and I’m running to be your next Student Union President.

I believe there is a clear need for the Student Union to be active, approachable, and a true representation of the students. The University must be a place where everyone is open to new ideas, creativity, and inclusivity. Students should be financially secure and confident with their voice representation.

As a student, I’ve consistently engaged with students, listening to their concerns and pushing through solutions. I understand the challenging atmosphere, and I am ready to deliver impactful changes.

If elected, I will focus on delivering practical, student-centred changes by:

  • Launching a non-profit, low-cost meal programme providing affordable, nutritious food for students with busy schedules.
  • Creating a more vibrant Student Union by supporting societies, introducing inter-society events, and organising activities that bring students together across cultures and interests.
  • Promoting student welfare by advocating for wider access to recorded lectures available to all students and actively gathering feedback from various student groups.

I will be a President who is vocal, visible, and result-oriented, not merely words.

Together, we can build a Student Union that truly represents and delivers for its students.

Vote Aimal Asif for the Student Union President.

  • Liasing with organisations and the university to address poor living conditions from landlords and companies.

Putting Student Voice First - Always

As VP Education, I will put student voice, concerns and ideas my top priority.

I will do this by increasing student representation and making sure students' voices are heard regularly and take action. I will increase the inclusivity of teaching practices, making learning accessible and increase support for underrepresented students, students with disabilities, and students with mental health issues.

I will work with staff to increase students' academic confidence, and allow all students to grow and meet their potential, advocating for clearer assessment feedback and increased transparency, with better communication between staff and students.

I will boost student voice and spotlight key issues through student surveys and campaigns, such as Accessible Education Week and Deadline Stress Week to support students through their NTU career.

I promise to be approachable, active and a listening ear for all NTU students.

Representing the Students of NTU.

Candidate Photo

Tony Clarke

A vote for Tony is a vote for getting YOUR money’s worth from your university education.

I will:

  • Advocate for university-wide tutor neurodiversity awareness training, including specific traits of neurodiverse conditions over and above common assumptions, to better understand neurodivergent students’ needs.
  • Campaign for complete versions of ALL lecture and seminar materials to be released at least 72 hours in advance to allow all students time to prepare their notes, etc.
  • Conduct a study into the effects of enforced engagement and the ACE point system on student mental health and wellbeing.
  • Work with VP Community & Welfare to improve engagement & belonging for PG-T, PG-R, PhD, and international students.
  • Lobby for earlier release of timetables to allow mature or working students, and those with care responsibilities, more time to plan.
  • Hold informal ‘course rep drop-in sessions’ twice a month to increase cohesion between academic reps and foster greater cross-school insights.
  • End the practice of tutors using ‘contact time’ to demand MySay or NSS survey completion. Feedback should be earned on its merits, not its enforcement.
  • Improve student connection on Brackenhurst and Mansfield campuses by committing to spending a minimum of one half-day at each, every week.

Leah McNaughton

My name is Leah, and I am running to be your next VP Education. I am an enthusiastic and empathetic person, who thrives on collaboration and values the diverse perspectives that shape our university community. Through my social secretary and wellbeing positions within History Society, I have gained valuable insight into the impact education has on student wellbeing and experience. I want to ensure that every student feels heard, supported, and genuinely represented at the academic table.

If elected my top priorities will be…

  • Improving access to and communication from university decision makers so that students feel informed, included, and confident in how academic decisions are made.
  • Encouraging greater engagement between students, course reps and school officers whilst continuing to advance the rep development programme.
  • Ensuring personal tutoring is consistent and high-quality. Providing tailored academic, wellbeing, and professional development support across all years of study.
  • Advocating for the earlier release of timetables and assessment information as well as reducing timetable and assignment clashes.

Students deserve an academic experience that adapts to their needs, respects their voices and delivers meaningful change.

So, if you like what you hear then ‘Never fear, Vote for Leah!’

Candidate Photo

Muhammad Talha Ejaz

Greetings! I'm Muhammad Talha Ejaz, and I'm running to be your next Vice-President Education.

I'm standing because I believe academic representation at NTU should be active, visible and accessible. Education goes beyond lectures & assessments, it is about students feeling heard, supported and represented in decisions that shape their university experience.

As an International Postgrad Student, I've seen first-hand that many students, particularly International + Postgrad have limited interaction with the NTSU. This needs to CHANGE. Representation should not feel distant, rather it should be structured and responsive.

When elected, the focus will be meaningful student-centred change by being; Visible, Present, Inclusive and Available. This will be achieved by:

  • Establishing regular meetings with large student bodies & major societies to better understand academic challenges.
  • Strengthening engagement with the wider student body, ensuring their academic concerns are actively dealt with.
  • Talking to different cultures & Faiths to see how they can be better represented on Campus.

NTSU should be; "For The Students, By The Students."

I will be a Vice-President who listens carefully, and works in collaboration to enhance the overall student experience.

Let's work together to build a better Student Experience on Campus.

Vote Muhammad Talha Ejaz for Vice-President Education.

Cieran Barry

Student-led activity has defined my time at Nottingham Trent. As a Men’s Rugby Union 1st XV Vice-Captain, club committee member, and Marketing & Communications Officer, I have seen first-hand how societies and sport build belonging, leadership and lifelong skills — and where better support can unlock even more potential.

Alongside this, my 13-month placement at BMW Group Ireland in Sales, Events and Marketing, and my role as a Red Bull Student Marketeer, have equipped me with the professional skills needed for this role. I have delivered large-scale events, managed budgets, worked with senior stakeholders, and produced insight-driven reports — experience I would bring directly into representing and advocating for NTU students.

As Vice President Societies & Sport, I would combine lived student experience with a strategic, outcomes-focused approach. My priorities are clear.

  • Break down barriers to participation so every student — including international and underrepresented groups — can engage in societies and sport across all NTU campuses.
  • Work with NTU Employability to recognise, develop and promote the leadership and professional skills gained through societies and sport.
  • Ensure societies and sports clubs actively shape NTSU and NTU decisions, major events, and the future direction of student-led activity.
Candidate Photo

Ben Parker

I’m running for VP Societies & Sport to support and empower our student groups.

Growth - I will work to create opportunities to join societies and sports clubs for all students including those who study on satellite campuses. I will ensure that accessibility is a key focus of NTSU and NTU Sport so that participation in student groups is available for everyone.

Promotion - I will work with the marketing and communication teams at NTSU and NTU Sport to promote and highlight our societies and sports clubs. I will make our student groups feel recognised and celebrated around NTU.

Incentivise - I will create incentives to encourage people to run for committee positions. I will work to make our student leaders feel rewarded for the time and effort it takes run a society or sports club.

Experience - I will work to improve the experience of committee members by reviewing structures and internal processes to ensure that communication between NTSU, NTU Sport and student leaders is smooth and efficient.

Think again, vote for Ben!

Candidate Photo

Angeline Smith

I’m running to be your next VP societies and sport. Both societies and sport are a big part of NTU. I want to implement better interaction between societies and sports clubs, intergrating both together to help with engagement across all campuses.

I also want to work with NTU Sport to embed mental health awareness into club culture and committee training, making sure all committee members feel well equipped in managing pressure and supporting club members. I want to advocate for inclusion for all and trans-inclusive sport, working with NTU Sport to ensure facilities are accessible and welcoming for all students and prioritising student feedback from all communities so that delivery of programmes are suited towards everyone.

Having been on a sports committee for three years I’ve worked closely with BUCS which has allowed to become familiar with their guidelines, I'll work with NTU Sport to ensure clubs and committees are well supported with clear guidance and that all clubs are represented.

I’ll build on the president’s network already in place for sports clubs which i’ve been involved in this year as club president, and work on expanding this network to integrate societies and sports clubs together building on that relationship.

Urvashi Dudi

When you vote for me as Vice President for Welfare and Wellbeing, you are not just choosing a title. You are choosing someone who will listen when it feels like no one else is.

College life looks exciting from the outside, but we all know the truth. There are days when stress feels heavier than our books. Days when loneliness is louder than a crowded room. Days when asking for help feels harder than suffering in silence. If I am elected, I promise this: no student will feel invisible.

I will listen to your concerns and take them seriously. I will speak up for students who feel unheard. I will push for safe spaces, open conversations, and practical support that actually helps, not just policies on paper.

This role is not about power for me. It is about responsibility. Responsibility to stand beside you on your hard days, not just celebrate you on your good ones.

If you vote for me, you are voting for empathy, action, and a student voice that will not be ignored.

Together, we can build a college where success does not come at the cost of wellbeing.

Thank you! ❤️

Feeling supported at university shapes confidence, academic success and a true sense of belonging. I am running for Vice President Welfare and Community because I understand how intentional support changes student experiences.

As an international student, I know how overwhelming unfamiliar systems can feel. Navigating visas, healthcare and housing without clear guidance creates unnecessary stress. I want to strengthen communication, improve peer support networks and ensure international students are properly represented in decisions that affect them.

As a mental health nursing student, I have seen how deeply wellbeing influences every part of student life. Support should not begin at crisis point. I will advocate for preventative, culturally aware initiatives and clearer pathways to accessing help before students reach breaking point.

My leadership as President of the BAME Society at college and founder of an afrocentric book club reflects my commitment to building inclusive spaces where students feel heard and valued. Accessibility must be considered from the start, particularly for disabled and neurodivergent students.

I am also passionate about environmental sustainability and its link to wellbeing. A responsible, sustainable campus supports a stronger student community. I will approach this role with accountability, lived experience and a genuine commitment to meaningful representation.

Candidate Photo

Katy Falkingham

I would like to run to be VP community and welfare because I’ve struggled a lot with life on campus and believe future students should be spared these struggles.

I believe the SU needs to stand up for student renters and call out bad landlords or agencies. Marginalised students deserve more support: I’ll push for better support during international crises for students personally affected, and to simplify the process of reporting assaults. I would also make the safe taxi scheme more financially accessible for students who study late into the evening. I’ll push for free & fun events for students to build new skills.

I am a queer & neurodivergent student who cares deeply for those in vulnerable positions in society. As an activist, society welfare secretary and VP, I have worked closely with local advocacy movements: including Palestinian, Sudanese and Kurdish freedom movements, acorn the renter’s union, women’s rights and sex worker advocacy, as well as trans rights campaigns.

In 2024, I was involved in writing and passing the NTSU motion-referendum which called for a ceasefire in Palestine and reformed international student support - the first policy-referendum ever passed at NTSU.

I believe in better for NTU students.

Candidate Photo

Mischa Dooley

My name is Mischa and I’m running to be your next VP Community and Welfare. My 1st few months as your 25/26 VP Education have taught me that not only do I want to help make a change in students academic lives, but to their student experience as a whole. I want to help foster a student experience that is inclusive, caring and supports students in making their time at NTU seamless and enjoyable.

If elected I aim to:

  • Continue improving and promoting nighttime safety initiatives for all students, continuing to work with affiliated companies and more throughout Nottingham.
  • Champion mental health initiatives, supporting and developing current work in conjunction with students and staff.
  • Increase awareness of support available to students surrounding housing issues, and helping students understand their rights.
  • Boost visibility of vital student services, such as societies, the global lounge, quiet spaces and others to help students feel less isolated.
  • Continue tackling barriers to learning pushing for consistent academic standards across all schools.

Students deserve a university experience where they feel safe, included and respected, where barriers beyond their control don’t affect the quality of their experience.

Remember, Don't be a Fooley, Vote for Dooley!

Candidate Photo

Trisha Nagele

I am running for Vice President Community & Welfare because I genuinely care about how students feel at university, not just how things look on paper. As an international student, I understand how isolating and overwhelming university life can be especially when you’re far from home, navigating a new culture and trying to find where you belong.

I believe welfare is about more than services — it’s about creating a community where students feel safe, supported and heard. I want to work towards improving mental health support, strengthening student safety and ensuring that no one feels invisible or alone on campus. Having worked in team based and community focused environments, I am confident in my ability to listen, advocate and represent students’ voices with empathy and integrity.

If elected, I would prioritise inclusivity, open conversations around wellbeing and practical support that genuinely reflects students’ needs. I want Trent to be a place where students don’t just survive university — they feel valued, protected and empowered throughout their journey.

Candidate Photo

Muhammad Hashim

As a PGDL Law student at Nottingham Trent University from Pakistan, balancing studies, family with two young children, and student visa life, I know NTU students’ struggles—mental health, housing costs, sustainability, and inclusion. I’m Muhammad Hashim, your candidate for Vice President Community & Welfare, dedicated to amplifying your voices for real change.

Welfare First

I’ll champion mental health, safety, cost-of-living, and housing campaigns, partnering with NTU services and stakeholders for accessible support. Collaborating with student groups, we’ll tackle consent, drugs awareness, and equity, ensuring international and underrepresented voices shape decisions.

Sustainability Leadership

Co-chairing the Sustainability Advisory Board, I’ll embed green practices across NTUSU, influencing NTU policies through student-led outreach and international partnerships for lasting environmental impact.

Stronger Communities

Working with local/global partners, I’ll boost access to services, push transparent welfare policies, and represent students in key meetings as President’s deputy.

With project management experience and legal insight, I’ll deliver fair, student-centered results.

Vote Hashim for welfare, sustainability, and unity!

Almira Aidarkhanova

University isn’t just about passing exams, it’s about how you feel while you’re here. I’m running for Vice President Community & Welfare because I care about the everyday student experience, especially the parts that don’t always get talked about.

My focus is simple: make support clearer, community stronger and help students feel less alone.

First, I want support to feel more visible and human. Help exists, but it often feels hidden behind long emails and millions of webpages. I will push for clearer signposting, simple guides and communication that actually reaches students, so asking for help feels normal, not overwhelming.

Second, I want to build low-pressure, genuinely inclusive community spaces. Not everyone wants loud events or big crowds. As an international student, I understand how easy it is to feel unsure where you fit. I want to create smaller, accessible ways to connect so no one feels like they’re standing on the outside <3

Most importantly, I want students to feel like someone is actually listening. I will prioritise regular conversations, visible presence across campuses and turning everyday concerns into real, practical improvements. I’m ready to step up, represent students confidently and make sure your voice leads meaningful change!!! ♥️
