Category: Student Support
While school officers and course representatives have a vital role in feeding back student voice to the university, there is not scope for student support from other peers on your course unless you have made friends easily. In some cases, even reaching out to friends for support can be daunting.
I would like to propose several roles within courses to help students get the support they need. While the university has a lot of support programmes such as RISE, the Library, Employability team, and StepUp, these support networks may not always be available or suitable for certain course projects. The roles would like that of a mentor, a course mentor. I suggest that students can apply to be a course mentor and once accepted, you could help peers from the year below. A year 2 mentor could help a year 1 student, a year 3 mentor could help a year 2 student, and a masters students could help a year 3 student, a PHD mentor could help a masters student and other PHD students.
The aim of this, is to give students more opportunities to develop skills in mentoring and also give students more support if they need it. Many courses only have 1 formative feedback point, so this could be very helpful for giving students multiple points of receiving feedback and therefore have more opportunities for development.
As an incentive, similar to course representatives and school officers, course mentors could receive HEAR Accreditation and CV accolades to make yourself more employable.
