This Union notes:
- The UK Government has introduced an anti-strike bill to Parliament, the Strikes (Minimum Service) Bill, aimed at further eroding our already weak right to strike [1].
- The UK has some of the toughest anti-strike laws in Europe [2].
- This legislation will directly affect students studying at NTU who intend to work in sectors targeted by these anti-strike laws, such as teaching or healthcare.
- As a Student Union, we share the values of solidarity and collective action with our trade union counterparts.
- An estimated one third of students are working while studying [3]. This anti-worker legislation is an attack on student’s right to strike and our ability to campaign for better pay and working conditions through collective action.
By passing this Big Idea, this Union resolves:
- To run an SU campaign against the anti-strike bill.
- To support students wishing to take action to campaign against the anti-strike bill.
- To support the Trade Union Congress’ (TUC) campaign against the anti-strike legislation, and any related campaigns by the Univeristy and Colleges Union (UCU) or the National Union of Students (NUS).
- To support the TUC’s ‘Protect the right to strike’ day on February 1 [4].
- For the SU President to write to local MP’s outlining student opposition to the legislation and asking them to vote against this anti-strike bill.
- To support any future industrial action by NTU UCU.
- “support” is defined as, but not limited to:
- writing an all-student email informing students about the proposed anti-strike legislation and the SU’s opposition to it;
- writing an all-student email about the TUC’s ‘protect the right to strike’ day;
- organising subsidised transport to any national demonstration that may take place;
- using the display screens in the SU to promote the campaign against the anti-strike legislation; and,
- to make resources available to students who may wish to run their own campaigns against the anti-strike legislation, or to show solidarity with striking workers.
