In the 2023/24 academic year, NTSU recorded total emissions of 1,850.62 tonnes of CO2e. This reflects a return to “business as usual” following the pandemic, with increased student activity, events, and services contributing to a rise in emissions.
The majority of our footprint comes from our supply chain, which accounts for over 78% of total emissions, followed by energy use in leased buildings. Direct emissions from fleet vehicles and refrigerants make up less than 1% of the total.
This year’s report highlights improvements in data accuracy and reporting methods, ensuring a clearer and more reliable picture of our environmental impact. While overall emissions have increased alongside activity levels, the rise was smaller than expected.
We have also seen positive reductions in waste, with much of our waste successfully diverted from landfill through recycling and recovery processes.
NTSU remains committed to achieving net-zero carbon across all emissions by 2040. We are continuing to develop reduction pathways and embed sustainable practices across our activities in collaboration with students, staff and partners.
This report is a key step in improving transparency and identifying where we can make the biggest impact moving forward.
