The 500 acre Brackenhurst site has the potential to become a well thought-out pioneering Rewilded site, which could become an integral learning-environment for all of its Agriculture, Agriculture-Wildlife-Land Management-Ecology & Conservation-Environmental Sciences students, staff, the public and all and any visitors.
As a student here at Brackenhurst I have seen some of the great ideas for Nature created over the years and some great ideas going forward for this year 2026 too. Let's build on those with a big site-wide plan and a big yes to getting a truly Biodiverse & Bioabundant site that it could be at Brackenhurst, on a landscape scale.
Working with agricultural processes and techniques with flora and fauna biodiversity in mind, both nature and agriculture can and will benefit each other and as a resource. These 2-way benefits have been seen to work so effectively alongside agricultural practices and should be something that NTU is striving towards as a leading teaching-facility.
All large land owners have a responsibility for biodiversity and bioabundance on their site. At a large scale the land could also aid in flood-prevention for the nearby town of Southwell for example, as well as become a beacon of habit restoration and potential for wildlife corridors connecting other land in Nottinghamshire.
This is not a plea nor a suggestion but a necessary starting point that NTU and its representative students and experienced staff need to engage in and start that process of Large Scale Nature Restoration, for the sake of the University as a productive, sustainable, educational authority.
Maybe this could coincide with the opening of the Lythe Buildling this year of 2026? A truly amazing space that could soon be open for some great learning spaces for students and visitors alike.
NTU should at least meet with an organisation like Restore or Rewilding Britain to start an open and public discussion about creating a rewilded site at Brackenhurst. There are some already great ideas from very experienced and knowledgeable staff at Brackenhurst who would give the necessary input in to the site here.
Not just for Carbon Offset points or Carbon Storage or BNG's or Agricultural Subsidies or Farmers Grants, but for the students of today, for the students of the next generations and for the generations that will use this land after we are gone.
Please support this proposal now and let's start something amazing for NTU Brackenhurst and its surrounding land too.
