About NTSU

What is a Students' Union?

A Students' Union is a student-led organisation that exists to represent, support, and empower students throughout their university journey. Independent from the university itself, the Union ensures that every student's voice is heard on the issues that matter most. At Nottingham Trent Students' Union (NTSU), we're proud to be affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS) and dedicated to enhancing student life through representation, services, events, and development opportunities that help our members thrive both on and off campus.

Who We Are at NTSU

Nottingham Trent Students’ Union is one of the largest and most active Students’ Unions in the UK. We’re here to help NTU students make the most of their university experience, whether that’s through our state-of-the-art venues, a varied programme of events and entertainment, or the support and representation we provide. Our work is guided every day by our engaged and diverse student community. As an organisation, we employ over 300 student staff and 60 career staff, who together speak more than 20 languages.

In recent years, we’ve focused heavily on developing our People and Culture, strengthening our Sustainability work, and investing in Learning and Development. Since 2022, we’ve achieved EcoCampus Silver Accreditation, received an ‘Excellent’ rating as a Green Impact Students’ Union, and now divert 97% of our in-house waste away from landfill. This work is largely led by our Sustainability Advisory Group, which brings together colleagues from across the organisation, including senior leaders, student staff, and external partners. We’re proud to be the first Students’ Union in the UK to achieve independent ISO14001 accreditation, to have co-founded the Sustainable Charter for smarter supply chain purchasing, and to calculate our carbon footprint each year as we work towards our Net Zero by 2040 goal.

We’re committed to being an inclusive employer and to creating a welcoming and supportive place to work, where people feel valued and able to be themselves. As an Equal Opportunities and Disability Confident Employer, Nottingham Trent Students’ Union welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates, regardless of race, sex, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or age.

Some of our roles receive a high number of applications, and because of this, we’re unfortunately unable to provide feedback to candidates who do not progress to the interview stage.

We really appreciate everyone who takes the time to apply to work with us. While we always aim to respond to applications as quickly as possible, if you haven’t heard from us within four weeks of the closing date, please assume that your application has not been successful on this occasion.

What It's Like to Work at NTSU

Part business, part charity - students' unions are serious fun places to work. They are organisations in their own right. Professional teams support elected student leaders to make change, improve lives and fulfill potential, we help make it happen.

Nottingham Trent Students' Union (NTSU) is one of more than 550 students' unions across the country. With more than 40,000 members, 300 student staff and 60 career staff, along with a huge range of services across multiple campuses, we are one of the biggest.

We offer an advice centre, representation, student groups and much more. Professionally run, but different.

Please note: NTSU employees cannot also be part of the Freshers' Team. This includes both career and student staff.

Evacuation policy

Staff and Security teams are trained and on hand for assistance in emergency or first aid incidents. City and Clifton venues include refuge points with communication links on the first floor upwards. They also include evacuation chairs which trained Staff and Security teams can use if immediate evacuation is required. (These should only be used by trained staff.)

Strobe lighting

Events in our venues include strobe lighting and other lighting and haze-based effects.

We also hire our venues out to other users and promoters who may have their own production effects outside our control. Please contact us at the earliest opportunity if you would like any guidance regarding a specific event.

Tell us what we are missing

We appreciate that there is always more to be achieved to ensure a truly accessible and equitable online and on-campus offer for all students. Therefore, if there is something you think could be improved or you have any issues, please reach out to us in person, through our socials or via email.

Carbon Footprint

Our carbon footprint allows us to identify our biggest areas of negative impact on the environment. Our footprint is calculated in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). In 2023/24 our total carbon footprint was 1850 tCO2e, this has slightly increased from our previous reporting year however we have largely increased our business activity.

SAG:

The sustainability advisory group is a staff and student board who come together to discuss sustainability related issues within the SU. It comprises of student staff members and staff from all areas of the SU.

The aim of SAG is to ensure cohesion across the organisation in working towards the common goal of being environmentally conscious. Through providing our staff and student staff with a platform to discuss sustainability issues within all departments at the SU, we can use the combined effort to drive forward change and embed it into all future development.

The link to the outcomes from our last meeting is here .

ISO14001 through EcoCampus

We are currently on our journey to becoming accredited with ISO14001 through the EcoCampus scheme. ISO14001 is an international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). These are frameworks that allow organisations to put systems and processes in place to ensure business activity acknowledges the negative environmental impacts it has. It ensures procedures are in place to minimise these impacts as much as possible so that the future of the organisation works as environmentally beneficially as possible.

Why is having an EMS beneficial?

  • Allows us to demonstrate legal compliance
  • Evidences action being taken to reduce our environmental impact
  • Demonstrates control of high-risk activities
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement
  • Ensures continual improvement for the organisation

Working with EcoCampus

We are working with the EcoCampus programme to reach our accreditation. EcoCampus provides support, training and resources to aid educational institutions in implementing a fully working EMS. There are four stages to reaching ISO14001 accreditation within EcoCampus – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. We are currently awarded Gold and have our Platinum audit coming up.

EcoCampus Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum awards

Gaining certification assures that NTSU systems help to effectively manage and mitigate environmental impacts and reach our environmental objectives.

Learn more about Student Life Pulse

NTSU is committed to creating diverse communities of fulfilled students motivated to create positive change. To help us reach this goal, we are proud members of Student Life Pulse, an online survey used by Students’ Unions across the UK, representing the views of over 20,000 students each year.

What is Student Life Pulse?

Student Life Pulse is an insight survey which tracks the experience of our students throughout the academic year. Between October and June, you will receive an email inviting you to take part by completing the online survey. You will only receive the invite in one month so make sure you take the opportunity to give your views and have your voice heard.

We want to hear from as many students as possible, whatever their experience or knowledge of the Students’ Union is - every view matters.

The benefit to you of taking part

We know your time is valuable and that’s why students who take part will be up for the chance to win one of 5 £100 vouchers available throughout the year as a thank you for taking part. If you’re one of the lucky winners, you can choose from an Amazon, Tesco, Love2Shop or NTSU commerical outlet voucher.

Student Life Pulse helps us plan the services and support we offer you. Every student who takes part is helping to improve the university experience for themselves and other students.

Your personal data is safe

Alterline, an independent research agency, is our partner for this survey. Alterline follows all guidelines for data privacy and security. It only has enough information about you to conduct the research. Any information you disclose will be treated in the strictest confidence, and the results are anonymised, so no answers are attributable to any individuals. You can read their General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) policy here.
