Nottingham Trent Students’ Union has been named Higher Education Students’ Union of the Year at the NUS Awards 2015. The award saw us come out on top ahead of national competition in the main awards category offered by the National Union of Students (NUS).

Winning this award is a fantastic achievement which highlights a year in which we have achieved many successes and enjoyed national recognition for our delivery of a quality student experience including societies, volunteering, academic representation, employability training, social activities and a free advice service. We also benefitted from NTU’s investment in our new building at our city site, which provides an inspiring social and leisure space for our students.

The year began with the outgoing elected officers being named Officer Team of the Year at the previous annual NUS Awards, an accolade which was soon followed by dramatic improvement in our National Student Survey standing, where we saw a jump from 58th to 10th place! We were also awarded 3rd place in the Best Students’ Union category at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards and were ranked joint 13th in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

Further recognition was achieved when our micro-pig pet-therapy room designed to help with exam stress was picked up by the global media. We also mobilised students to engage with local and national politics in the run up to the General Election by launching a Nottingham Students Manifesto and holding on-campus hustings with local parliamentary candidates.

NTSU President, Jeremiah Anson, said “Working with the support of NTU, our goal is to make the university experience of all NTU students the best it can be. Being named SU of the Year shows that we are having the desired impact on our members lives and are delivering on our goal to a sector-leading level.”

We are now looking to build on this success by continuing to push for excellence and delivering a first class student experience which is at the forefront of student engagement and representation in the UK.
