NTSU Exec Statement on Postponed Graduation Ceremonies

Friday 30-04-2021 - 13:41

As officers who had expected to graduate in July 2020 ourselves, we share the disappointment of both the 2020 and 2021 cohorts of students whose graduation ceremonies now face further postponement.

We acknowledge, however, that the uncertainty over the potential impact current regulations, which still affect events, travel and hospitality may still have on graduation ceremonies which creates significant risks to ceremonies planned for July and September. The impact of a last-minute cancellation would affect students and guests, who may lose money on travel, accommodation, and other associated costs. There would also be a risk of international students being unable to enter the country due to restrictions and quarantine costs.

The UK’s events and hospitality industries are grappling with similar challenges, with some having to cancel or postpone events such as summer festivals. Many universities across the UK have entirely cancelled ceremonies or offered online events, something which we do not consider to be acceptable for NTU students.

We will continue to express your voices to the University on this issue. We have already highlighted the desire for all graduation ceremonies to take place in University Hall when government guidelines allow. Additionally, we have discussed the problems created by scheduling ceremonies on weekdays for those who completed education courses and may consequently be in full time teaching roles. We continue to engage with NTU on both these issues to find a suitable solution.

The Union’s officers have advocated for a more affordable graduation outfit hiring system and we greatly welcome the University providing free gowns, hoods, and hats to all students in the 2020 and 2021 cohorts. This is welcome step that removes a financial burden for thousands of students.

Finally, we share your frustration. We will continue to ensure the University understands how important graduation is to students and that you get the ceremony you deserve. As a Students’ Union, we also remain committed to giving you the opportunity to celebrate socially at a final LDOT and Graduation Ball when able to so.
