At a very poignant time with the Black Lives Matter movement and the passing of Chadwick Boseman, NTSU is starting Black History Month with a screening of Black Panther.
Black Panther is part of Afrofuturism - the multi-genre approach for engaging the positive possibilities of technology for Black people across time and space in art, music, and science. Black Panther smashed box office takings by being the highest-grossing solo superhero launch of all time which is made even more powerful by it being the first of its kind in the Marvel universe to feature a predominately Black cast by a Black director.
Chadwick, a hero to young Black and brown kids who had never seen someone like them take on the mantel of a superhero. With this in mind, the real heroes of Black Panther and are its women. Wakanda, while a patriarchal monarchy, it is the women who are the driving force as mighty, intelligent warriors. Wakanda's women are far more fierce that its men, giving an entire generation of black and brown kids a different vision of their futures and possibilities than what is set out in mainstream media.
