Celebrating Black Hair: Discussion and workshop around Colourism and Texturism.

It's time for us to come together and gain a greater understanding and take a look at race-based prejudice.

We invite you to join us on the Mezz Lounge to gain a greater understanding of exactly what colourism and texturism are, particularly in the black community and talk about the ways we can work toward dismantling this prejudice.

In the black community, colourism has been a thing for a long time. The assumption is often that colourism began with slavery, however, this is not entirely true; colourism was already known to be a thing in Ancient Egypt. The difference between colourism then and colourism now is that previously colourism was class-related whereas now it is race and skin-tone related.

Come along and gain a better understanding of what ‘hair types’ are and why different hair types take different types and levels of care, and some still face discrimination today.
