Men's Mental Health Panel

Join our panelists to learn more about Men's mental health, why it's such a prevelant issue and what we can do to help men to discuss these issues and get better.

Speaking, we have:

Will Wilson – rugby player: Graduated from Oxford with a BA in History in 2018, having also won an England 7s cap two months before his finals. He spent two years at Wasps with loan periods at Griquas in South Africa and Cornish Pirates. “I struggled with my mental health throughout my time at Wasps, to the extent that I have now stopped playing rugby altogether. I’m currently studying law and have a job at a London law firm waiting upon completion of my studies”

Cameron Sutton – Exec member: I graduated from NTU with a BA Hons in Media and Film in 2020, during which time I was elected as VP Opportunities in the 20/21 NTSU elections, looking after the Union's societies, fundraising and volunteering activities. Personally speaking, it's important to also highlight undiagnosed mental health conditions, especially in the case of men who may be less likely to reach out for help.

Mark – Muted (Men’s Mental Health Charity): Previously diagnosed with depression and anxiety, I used fitness and exercise to help start my recovery journey. Having been through this process and experiencing the impact that physical activity can have on your mental health, I left my career in engineering to become a personal trainer specialising in working with people who experience mental ill health.

Benedict Wills – NTU Student: Hi, I’m Benedict, I’m a masters student at NTU, I would say I’m a pretty open book but over the last few years I haven’t been open about my mental health issues, I have never really spoken out about it until the last 2 years in which I’ve found that speaking out can really help, that’s why when Zoë wanted people to talk about their mental health, I jumped at the opportunity to help others.

Jelani Littlehales - NTU Student: Dealt with bereavement of my sole parent at 16 so alongside that came depression, anxiety, loneliness, stress etc & have seasonal affective disorder. In the scope of men’s mental health obviously toxic masculinity makes showing emotions or vulnerability a weakness so did have a hard time navigating that while also trying to get support from friends etc.

The panel chair will be Zoë Mallett, your VP Community and Welfare, as part of her Movember campaign.

This will be a safe space for students, in particular Men, to discuss the issues which affect them and their mental health, how we can raise awareness and what all of us can do to look after our own and each others wellbeing.
