Reclaim Our Voices: Online Open Mic

A supportive space for sisters and siblings to gather and express ourselves in a supportive space just for us.
Share your creative expression on the open mic - including spoken word of all kinds, and song - or join us just to listen.

All self-identifying women and non-binary folks are welcome. This event is exclusively for them.

Thoughts and works shared may relate to gender-based violence; we recognise this has been a tough year for women and people of minority genders and we offer this space for solidarity. We're not limited to this topic though, so respectful expression on all themes is welcome.

Sign up for your 5 minute open mic slot   by emailing  jo.lewis@su.ntu.ac.uk  before the event, along with any questions about how to share your work on Teams. Slots will be first come-first served.

This event will be hosted as safely and sensitively as possible. We aim to keep everyone safe and respected within the event. Hate speech or discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated.

This event is part of the 16 Days Of Activism To End Gender-Based Violence programme by Vox Feminarum, a Derby-based organisation addressing issues impacting gender equality.

About The Hosts:

Jo Lewis (she/her) will host on behalf of Nottingham Trent Students’ Union (NTSU).  In addition to working for NTSU, Jo is a poet and songcrafter whose works include poetry book PleasureLand (2021, Big White Shed) and music album Where The Land Meets The Ocean (2018). She was a co-founder of performance collective She Speaks, has facilitated writing and songcrafting workshops, and led noise-making events to empower women to raise their voices in activism.

Vox Feminarum: Women's Voices  (VoxFemme for short) started in response to a growing realisation that, for many women, the issues affecting them lacked a coherent voice or vehicle and that these issues were often not on any socio-political agenda.  VoxFemme hopes to engage women all over the world in raising the concerns and the issues affecting all our lives and livelihoods.

Women In STEM Society  has been running for 3 years with the intent of forming a community and safe space for those who are typically under-represented in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths. The society is open to everyone, with a focus on supporting women, non-binary and trans-masc people in STEM, providing them with opportunities and forming a community of like-minded individuals.
