Taking Up Space: Growth, Identity and the Importance of Representation as a Commercial Artist - with Artist Kim Thompson

Friday 13th October, 6pm – 8pm, The Loft, City SU

Join NTSU in welcoming local artist Kim Thompson for a talk on Taking Up Space: Growth, Identity and the Importance of Representation as a Commercial Artist.

Kim Thompson (she/her) is a Commercial Illustrator and Painter based in Nottingham. With a client list including Converse, Columbia Records, and Penguin Random House, Kim's work combines retro kitsch aesthetics with her passion for escapism, pop culture and highlighting and empowering marginalised communities.

In this session, Kim will share her experiences of transitioning from arts education to carving a career as an artist, self promotion and branding, and embracing personal identity and ethics as an industry professional.

Kim can be found on Instagram at either @kim_a_tron (illustration) or @kimthompson.art (painting).

This event is open to all NTU students.

It will take place from 6pm (doors at 5:30pm) on Friday 13th October in The Loft, NTSU City Campus.

Tickets are free, but are limited to 75 - so don't delay!
This is a mosaic image of a Black woman with blue skin, in a pop art style. She has eyeballs interwoven in her afro hair, and a third eye on the middle of her forehead. All eyes - her own and in her hair - are pink. The image to the right hand side of the mosaic is of the person's body, which is topless, and has small, pink, vampiric mouths in place of nipples. The person is wearing stark white underwear and garters on her bottom half.A collection of images on a pink solid background. The top leftmost image is of a femme android holding another femme person in their arms. The person they are holding has vibrant purple skin and pink hair. The top rightmost image is of a smiling Black person with blonde afropuffs and curls around their cheeks, on a starry, galactic background. The bottom left image is of a Black femme astronaut floating in a chamber. The bottom rightmost image is of a Black femme person holding a ray gun in their right hand, left hand on their hip, in a yellow and black striped jumpsuit. They are wearing purple gloves that match their hair, and are on the surface of an unknown planet.
All artworks and images above are property of Kim Thompson and should not be used without prior permission.
