Join us in watching the exclusive Live-Stream of an evening of conversation with actor, comedian and author Stephen Fry, and Nobel Prize-winning biologist and President of the Royal Society Venki Ramakrishnan, as they explore establishing trust in science and how individuals can make rational and objective decisions. Yes - an in-person APSoc meet-up!
(Please be aware, with Nottingham's local lockdown pending, we may decide to host this event online instead)
The very nature of science is to establish truth about the world around us, from groundbreaking new discoveries, like the Higgs boson, gravitational waves or the potential for life in the clouds of Venus, to issues with major social implications like climate change and biodiversity loss. While the growth of the internet and social media makes it easier than ever before to obtain this information, the free-for-all nature of the internet also makes it difficult for the average citizen to distinguish fact from fiction, truth from mistruth, and legitimate sources from fake news. The onslaught against evidence-based facts is a growing problem. As an army of scientists continue to find themselves on the frontline of scientific discovery as they battle Covid-19, the role of scientific evidence and rational thought in an internet age of superstitions, rumours and pseudoscience has never been more apparent.
Come along, bring some snacks and drinks and join in the conversation! We'll leave some time for our own discussions at the end so don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to hang out with everyone at APSoc!
Please remember to be socially distant, follow markings and signage, and remember that some seats have been made redundant to aid with social distancing. If you feel unwell, or if any of you or your housemates are self-isolating, please do not attend.
