Promote your community

Promoting your community and its activities is important if you want to grow your membership

Here’s how you can use social media to do that.

The freshers fair is a great opportunity to introduce and promote your Community and to get more members signed up. The fairs will be on the following days:

Monday 20th September – Brackenhurst Campus Freshers’ Fair

Tuesday 21st September – Clifton Campus Freshers’ Fair

Thursday 23rd September – City Campus Freshers’ Fair

To book your space at the Freshers’ fair, please complete this form.

Every Community associated with NTSU has their own area on our website. This is where students can find out more about all our student groups and find out about upcoming events. A full list of Communities can be found at and a full list of events, including society events, can be found at Communities.

You will want to keep the information about your Community up to date. Go through your Leader Training to find out how to use the website effectively.

If your Community is a network, using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are great channels for sustaining Community engagement so setting them up with recognisable usernames (E.g. @NTSUExampleCommunity) is a great place to start. If you don’t have the time to commit to all three, just focus on doing one or two of them really well. Using central SU social media platforms to promote a one-off Community project is also a great place to start.

There are a few things to consider when it comes to creating content for your social media channels.

All content should provide value:

Brian Millar, Co-founder of the Emotional Intelligence Agency, said: “Great online content is either funny, useful, beautiful or inspiring.” Bare these four things in mind and make sure everything you post provides value for your audience in some way.

It shouldn’t be all about sales:

It’s easy to get caught up in promoting your own posts but no-one likes a pushy sales person. You should balance your promotional posts with non-sales content your audience will find helpful. Find out how to do this effectively here.

Tailor it to each platform:

Different types of content perform best on different social media platforms so be sure to adapt your content based on which one you’re posting on.  Below is an overview of what works well on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  • Facebook – Educational or informative content e.g. blog posts, articles and videos.
  • Twitter – Real-time updates and announcements.
  • Instagram – Behind the scenes, non-promotional posts featuring high quality images.

Posting regularly is important if you want to keep your audience engaged. How regularly depends on both the time you have available and the platform but here are some guidelines:

  • Facebook – once a day. Any more than that limits the organic reach of your original post
  • Twitter – 3x or more. The fast-paced nature of Twitter means you’ll need to post more frequently to be seen
  • Instagram – once a day or every other day works best with Instagram’s algorithm

The best time of day to post will differ depending on your specific audience. Experiment and use your analytics to see when works best.

Engaging and building relationships with your audience is just as important as what you actually post. Make sure you reply to their comments and share other content where relevant.
