Wouldn't you love to relax with like-minded students? Chat about the coursework in a chill environment? Just sit and play music without anyone batting an eye?
I'm proposing we open NTU Music & Creative Lounge.
So, what would the Music Lounge be?
The Music Lounge would be a space open for FREE to all NTU students with an interest in music. The space would have its own piano and acoustic guitar, bean bags, a sofa, and a couple of production Macs (Metronome style), plus a desk to provide an effective working environment for all the music courses.
It could even be expanded to include things relevant to other creative courses, such as a barre and practice floor in a corner for dance students, a lightbox table for illustration students, or a photography backdrop for photography students.
All the course leaders keep talking about networking, but NTU doesn't really provide a space for this other than a Teams channel (Now that NTU music centre has introduced a members fee... despite course costs raising by a grand), and let's face it... students hate Microsoft Teams. This space would allow the natural progression of networking. Students could leave their buisiness cards there with links to portfolios, meet people organically to form a band, hang out and jam together, and make new friends from across the School of Art and Design, leading to a better and more cohesive school of art and design. After all, we all agree that since the merger things have been run very messily in the parts of this school that used to be Confetti.
This is even more important now with UON losing their music department to cuts, as we will likely get an influx of music students who were originally going to go to UON.
Let's support the arts at NTU rather than following in the footsteps of UON.
This suggestion has been verbally backed by lecturers, NTU SEMP Society, and other creatives who I have spoken to.
