International student support

This page contains advice, support, and general information on what you might need to know as an international student at NTU.

About NTSU

Nottingham Trent Students’ Union (NTSU) is a separate organisation to NTU. We run all kinds of extracurricular stuff, including social events, fun activities, and personal development opportunities. We're also your official representative body, so we can help you make changes to your student experience and give you free, impartial support and advice if and when you need it.

In short, we're here to make your time at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) the best it can be. Here's our mission statement:

We empower students to make NTU the best academic and personal experiences for themselves and others. NTSU is a democratic, but non-political organisation.

Our core values

Through NTSU, you can get involved in almost anything while you're at uni. We have a variety of activities for you to get stuck into and a place for you to meet with friends on your campus.

Student Groups

We help organise student communities so you can meet people who share your interests and values through student societies.

Societies

We have over 100 societies at NTSU. Being a part of a society is an excellent opportunity to meet new people, try something new, and have fun. Students who join societies consistently tell us it's one of their favourite things about being an NTU student. Join a society if you want to meet new people with similar interests to you and make lifelong friends and memories.

We asked other international students for advice to share with you. Here's what they said:

“Join a society! There are many international societies that will help you make friends!”

“The SU services are really helpful if you need extra support with your studies.”

“Try new things. Other people are too focused on their own goals and lives to care about what you do. University goes so quickly, so don’t miss out.

“Join a culture society and visit the Global Lounge.”

“Learning and discovery is part of the journey.”

What is Freshers Week?

Freshers week is a week of welcome events designed to help you make new friends and introduce you to the University.

Do I have to pay to join the Students’ Union?

No. Students’ Union membership is free as long as you opt in when you enrol. Although, you may have to pay to join a society and attend specific events.

Your Spaces

NTSU has a dedicated building on City, Clifton, and Brackenhurst campuses. If you're studying on one of these campuses, we have a space where you can grab a bite to eat, meet friends for a coffee, or find a place to study.

All of our buildings have a fully licenced bar, a diner, coffee shop, and more.

Learn more about our spaces here >>

Getting help & support

We're not just here for the good times; we're also here if you're struggling. Whatever challenges you may face while studying at NTU, NTSU can give you additional support through our Information and Advice Service (IAS).

Our IAS offers free advice on:

  • Mental Health
  • Academic Support
  • Finances
  • and more

This service is strictly confidential and independent from the University. Your advice will not go further than the advisor who you have been in contact with.

Information for Parents

Confidentiality Policy

We operate a policy of strict confidentiality. This means we do not disclose anything a student has told us without their permission, including the fact they have consulted us.

We record all case details on AdvicePro, a password-protected casework database. Only the Information and Advice Service staff can access this database, and records are destroyed after seven years.

NTSU's VP Community & Welfare and VP Education are also included in our confidentiality policy.

In rare cases, for example, where there is reason to think a student is likely to harm themselves or others, we may disclose information without the student's consent. If you would like a copy of our full policy, please request this by emailing advice@su.ntu.ac.uk.

Information for Parents of Students

The Information and Advice Service is a confidential service for Nottingham Trent Students' Union members; therefore, we can only speak to our students themselves. Please ask your son/daughter to contact us directly, so we can assess what advice and information they may need, whether from us or another service.

We understand that students' parents are emotionally and often financially involved in their son/daughter's lives. However, we cannot discuss any student details with parents, guardians, or family members or even confirm they have been in contact with us.

One of our service principles is to empower students. Your son/daughter is legally responsible for their decisions and the consequences of how they live. We are here to help them through issues they may face as adults. Our many years of experience have shown it is in the adviser's and student's best interests to have that direct contact.

If you divulge any information to us about a student who is engaging with our service, we will make them aware of the information you have given us.

We can provide general information to parents — for example, where students can go for welfare support or academic help. You can also visit our website for information on many issues affecting students.

If you would like any specific advice on any issues e.g. what liabilities you have as guarantor, student finance queries etc., there are many other organisations that can help you, such as Citizens Advice, Shelter or Student Finance.

If you have concerns about your son or daughter's wellbeing, you may wish to contact someone at the University. Although bear in mind that under normal circumstances, no information about students can be divulged to parents without the student's permission. Please read the University's parent and carer FAQs for more information.

For more details about sources of wellbeing information and support, including third-party services, please see the University's get help and support page.

Student Minds also have helpful information about supporting your son/daughter at University.

Thank you for your understanding.
